Canes Recall Jeremy Welsh from Charlotte

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled center Jeremy Welsh from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, defenseman Joni Pitkanen has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb. 12.

Welsh, 24, is in his first full professional season and has totaled 10 goals and eight assists (18 points) in 47 games with the Checkers. He also played one game on the NHL level for Carolina, skating in the team’s 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Jan. 22. The Bayfield, Ont., native made his NHL debut for the Hurricanes in the team’s final game of the 2011-12 season, and has now played two career NHL games with Carolina, totaling four penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Welsh completed a three-year collegiate career for Union College of ECAC Hockey with 100 points (53g, 47a) in 119 games.
