RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forwards Brett Sutter and Jeremy Welsh to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, the team has activated Tim Brent from injured reserve.
Sutter, 25, averaged 8:20 of ice time per game in three games with Carolina after being recalled on March 3. The Viking, Alb., native is in his second season as Charlotte’s captain, and ranks fourth among Checkers skaters in scoring with 33 points (13g, 20a) in 52 games. Sutter (6’0”, 200 lbs.) is in his sixth professional season and has scored one goal and earned four assists (5 points) in 37 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina.
Welsh, 23, was recalled on Thursday and earned his first NHL point with an assist in the Hurricanes’ game against Montreal. The Bayfield, Ont., native is in his first full professional season and has totaled 11 goals and 10 assists (21 points) in 51 games with Charlotte in the AHL. Welsh (6’3”, 200 lbs.) made his NHL debut for the Hurricanes in the team’s final game of the 2011-12 season, and has played six career NHL games with Carolina. Prior to turning professional, Welsh completed a three-year collegiate career for Union College of ECAC Hockey with 100 points (53g, 47a) in 119 games.
