With three teams featuring Carolina Hurricanes players playing in two quarterfinal games on Wednesday, it was inevitable that at least one would be sent home without a medal.

FIN 3, RUS 1 [Recap: http://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/en/recap?id=2013090024, Stats: http://www.sochi2014.com/en/ice-hockey-men-s-play-offs-quarterfinals-02]: It was the Russian national team that struck first on the power play, but the Finns scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 victory that sends them into Friday’s semifinals. Tuomo Ruutu logged 18:47 of ice time, and opposite, Alexander Semin posted four shots on goal – including Russia’s best scoring chance of the second period as he was sprung on a quick rush, only to be denied by Tuukka Rask’s pad stack – in 13:53 of ice time. For Semin and the Russians, it’s a stinging defeat on friendly soil, as their tournament ends early. For Ruutu and Finland, they are at least guaranteed to be playing in a medal game.

USA 5, CZE 2 [Recap: http://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/en/recap?id=2013090026, Stats: http://www.sochi2014.com/en/ice-hockey-men-s-play-offs-quarterfinals-04]: The United States punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 5-2 win over the Czech Republic in a game that, despite being tied 1-1 early, was never really in doubt. Five different players scored for Team USA, including Phil Kessel who leads Olympic scoring with eight points (5g, 3a). Jonathan Quick made 21 saves, and Canes defenseman Justin Faulk was once again a healthy extra.

The schedule is now set for the last four games of the tournament: in Friday semifinal action, Ruutu and the Finns will face the Swedish national team at 7 a.m. (NBCSN), and the United States will take on Canada at noon (NBCSN) in a rematch of the 2010 gold medal game. The loser of each of these games will play for bronze on Saturday at 10 a.m. (NBCSN), and the winners will square off for gold on Sunday at 7 a.m. (NBC).
