After today's practice in Vancouver, coach Paul Maurice revealed that captain Rod Brind'Amour is on his way back to Raleigh to receive treatment for what he called a "nagging lower body issue."  Listen to Maurice's comments directly here.

That obviously leaves the Canes short at center for the time being.  Barring a call to Albany, I would expect Brandon Sutter to move up a line and Michael Ryan to shift over to center on the fourth unit.  Wade Brookbank is on the trip and could be inserted into the open spot at forward, or Maurice could dress seven defensemen if Niclas Wallin proves healthy enough.

Cam Ward was apparently given the day off today after starting his 17th consecutive game last night.  He didn't play his best, and Maurice said he has yet to make a decision on what he'll do tomorrow.

Update: The Canes recalled 23-year-old Jakub Petruzalek from Albany to fill Brind'Amour's spot.  Petruzalek ranks second on the River Rats in points with 12 goals and 22 assists through 47 games.  If he plays Thursday night against San Jose, it will be his NHL debut.
