Canes Agree to Terms with Borer, Peters
Pair of 2004 draft picks stay with organization

RALEIGH, NC—Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Casey Borer and goaltender Justin Peters to new one-year, two-way contracts. The deals will pay each player $500,000 at the NHL level and $60,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with $65,000 guaranteed.
“The upcoming season is important for both Casey and Justin,” said Karmanos. “Justin made big strides last year in Albany, and now it is time for him to take his game to the next level and show that he can be an NHL goaltender.
“Casey is coming off of a second consecutive season-ending injury, so it will be important for him to re-establish his defensive game so that he can once again play at the NHL level.”
Borer, 23, completed his second full professional season in 2008-09, splitting the season between Carolina and its AHL affiliate, the Albany River Rats. The Minneapolis, MN, native earned 10 points (4g, 6a) in 51 games with Albany before having his season cut short after suffering a broken vertebra in his neck in the River Rats’ bus crash on Feb. 19. Borer (6’2”, 205 lbs.) has scored one goal and earned two assists (3 points) in 14 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, and has notched 10 goals and earned 19 assists (29 points) in 113 career AHL regular-season games with Albany.Carolina selected Borer in the third round, 69th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Peters, 22, completed his third full professional season in 2008-09, posting a 19-30-4 record, 2.89 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 56 games with Albany. The Blythe, Ont., native also served as the Hurricanes’ back-up netminder for four games in early December when Cam Ward missed time with a groin injury. Peters (6’1”, 213 lbs.) has played 101 AHL career regular-season games with Albany, posting a 36-51-4 record, a 2.98 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage. The Hurricanes drafted Peters in the second round, 38th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
