HURRICANES ACQUIRE BRENDL, ST. JACQUES FROM FLYERS

Carolina sends Kapanen and Bast to Philadelphia

Right wing Pavel Brendl was acquired by the Hurricanes on Friday, in a trade that sent winger Sami Kapanen to Philadelphia.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes today announced that the team has acquired right wing Pavel Brendl and defenseman Bruno St. Jacques from Philadelphia. In exchange for Brendl and St. Jacques, the Hurricanes sent right wing Sami Kapanen and defenseman Ryan Bast to the Flyers.

“We were able to acquire two very good, young players for our team,” said Rutherford. “Brendl is still in the developing stages of his professional career and he has a big offensive upside.”

Brendl (6’ 1”, 206 lbs.) was drafted in the first round, fourth overall, in 1999 by the New York Rangers. The 21-year-old Opocno, Czech Republic, native is listed as a rookie despite playing in eight NHL games in 2001-02. In 42 games this season, Brendl has five goals, seven assists (12 points), four penalty minutes and a plus-8 plus/minus rating.

Brendl joined the Philadelphia organization in the Aug. 20, 2001, trade that sent center Eric Lindros to New York. In 2001-02, his first professional season, Brendl played eight regular-season games with the Flyers recording one goal and two penalty minutes. He also played in two of Philadelphia’s 2002 Stanley Cup playoffs games. In 64 regular-season contests with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League last season, Brendl recorded 15 goals, 22 assists (37 points) and 22 penalty minutes. In five 2002 AHL playoff games, he notched four goals and one assist (5 points).

St. Jacques (6’ 2”, 204 lbs.) was drafted by Philadelphia in the ninth round, 253rd overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. In 30 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms this season, St. Jacques has recorded seven assists and 46 penalty minutes. The 22-year-old Montreal, Que., native has played in six games this season for the Flyers. St. Jacques will report to Lowell of the AHL, the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliate.

“Bruno is still developing as an NHL defenseman,” said Rutherford, “but we feel he has a very good chance at playing for the Hurricanes in the near future.”

Kapanen leaves the Hurricanes after eight seasons. He ranks fifth in franchise history with 203 assists, sixth in games played (520) and ninth in points (348) and goals (145). The Carolina organization drafted Kapanen in the fourth round, 87th overall, in the 1994 draft.

“We’re thankful to Sami for all he’s done for our team,” said Rutherford.

The Hurricanes continue their four-game west coast swing tonight at Los Angeles. Following games at Anaheim and Dallas, Carolina returns to the RBC Center to face the Washington Capitals on Feb. 14 and 7 p.m. Tickets for that game and all Hurricanes games are available via the team’s official website, www.CarolinaHurricanes.com, the Dodge Box Office at RBC Center or by calling 919.834.4000.
