HURRICANES RECALL BAYDA, DRUKEN FROM LOWELL

Forwards will join Carolina due to injuries to Svoboda and Boulerice

Center Harold Druken was re-claimed off waivers from Toronto on Jan. 17, 2003.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has recalled forwards Harold Druken and Ryan Bayda from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Hurricanes forwards Jaroslav Svoboda and Jesse Boulerice were each injured during Tuesday’s game at Dallas.

Druken (6’ 0’’, 200 lbs.) is in his fourth professional season and has scored 59 points (27g, 32a) in 133 career NHL games with Vancouver, Carolina and Toronto. The Hurricanes acquired Druken from Vancouver earlier this season in the Nov. 1 trade that also brought Jan Hlavac to Carolina. He played in 10 games and earned one assist and two penalty minutes with the Hurricanes before the Maple Leafs claimed him on waivers Dec. 11. He played in five of 16 games for Toronto between Dec. 12 and Jan. 14 and totaled two assists and two penalty minutes while averaging 12:50 in time on ice. The Hurricanes reacquired Druken on waivers on Jan. 17. A second-round pick of the Canucks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Druken, 23, had two points (1g, 1a) in three games with the Canucks this season prior to the trade and has totaled five points (1g, 4a) in 18 NHL games this season. He has 10 points (4g, 6a) in 17 games in the AHL this year with Lowell and St.-John’s.

Bayda (5’ 11’’, 185 lbs.) is in his second professional season and has yet to make his NHL debut. He played three regular season games with Lowell last season after completing his collegiate career at North Dakota. In 56 career regular season AHL games, Bayda has tallied 45 points (12g, 33a) and 32 penalty minutes. He leads the Lock Monsters this season in points (43), assists (32) and games played (53).
