HURRICANES REASSIGN SURMA TO LOWELL

Winger Suffered Injury in Lone Game Played

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has reassigned left wing Damian Surma to Lowell of the American Hockey League. Surma was recalled from Lowell on March 17 and played for Carolina against Ottawa on March 18 when he suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for four Hurricanes games.

Surma (5’ 10’’, 200 lbs.) notched his first NHL goal in his debut on March 18. The Hurricanes selected the Lincoln Park, Mich., native in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Surma is in his first full professional season after making his professional debut with Lowell at the conclusion of the 2001-02 campaign, playing in one regular-season game and four playoff games. Surma, 22, has 20 points (9g, 11a) in 64 games with Lowell this season. In four seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Surma tallied 225 points (105g, 120a) and 306 penalty minutes in 241 games.

The Hurricanes will play host to Montreal on Monday night (7 p.m., Fox Sports Net). Tickets for that game and all Hurricanes games are available via the team’s official website, CarolinaHurricanes.com, the Dodge Box Office at RBC Center or by calling 919-834-4000.
