“Our participation in this rookie tournament allows us to see our prospects in competition with players their own age,” said Karmanos. “It also helps us determine which young players we will invite to our professional training camp the following week.”
The camp will begin Sept. 6 when the Canadiens’ and Senators’ prospects face off at 7 p.m. Carolina will play its first game on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Montreal at 7 p.m. before facing Ottawa on Sept. 8. A semifinal game on Sept. 9 will decide the championship game, scheduled for a 12 p.m. face off on Sept. 10.
Draft picks and signed players who have played one year or less in the American Hockey League are eligible for the tournament. Along with No. 2 overall draft pick Eric Staal and members of Carolina’s the 2003 draft class, Hurricanes draftees Sean Curry, Jesse Lane, Daniel Manzato, Jared Newman, Damian Surma, Adam Taylor and Cam Ward, among others, are eligible to compete. A complete roster will be announced closer to the tournament.
