Defenseman Danny Richmond will play for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League this season
RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2003) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that defenseman Danny Richmond has been returned to London of the Ontario Hockey League. The move reduces the Hurricanes’ training camp roster to 25 players, two more than the Opening Night limit.

Richmond, 19, was drafted by the Hurricanes with the first pick of the second round, 31st overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Following his freshman campaign at the University of Michigan, the Chicago, Ill., native was named to the 2002-03 Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team after recording three goals and 19 assists (22 points), and accumulating 48 penalty minutes in 43 games.

He left the Wolverines for the OHL during the 2003 offseason, and attended the Hurricanes’ rookie camp in Ottawa in early September where he recorded nine penalty minutes and a plus-3 rating in three games. Richmond (6’ 0”, 181 lbs.) saw significant ice time in three of Carolina’s first six NHL exhibition games and took shifts on the Hurricanes’ power-play and penalty-killing units.

Carolina’s training camp continues Thursday with an 11 a.m. practice at the RecZone. Following a pre-game skate at the RBC Center on Friday, the Hurricanes will travel north to begin a home-and-home, back-to-back set with Washington at MCI Center. The RecZone is located at 912 Hodges St. in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes open their seventh season in North Carolina on Oct. 9 at Florida, before returning to the RBC Center for their home opener, Saturday, Oct. 11 against defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey. Ticket packages for the 2003-04 season are available by calling 1-888-NHL-TIX1. Individual game tickets for October and November games are available at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, at all TicketMaster locations or by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000.
