RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 23, 2003) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that left wing Ryan Bayda has been recalled from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Right wing Joey Tetarenko has been reassigned to the Lock Monsters to make room in the Hurricanes’ lineup for Bayda.
In four games with Lowell this season, Bayda (5’ 11”, 185 lbs.) has notched four goals and two assists (6 points), and a plus-5 rating to lead the Lock Monsters. He was named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 19, following a hat trick against Worcester on Oct. 13, and a two-point night against Hartford on Oct. 18.
Bayda, 22, was drafted by the Hurricanes in the third round, 80th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Following three seasons at the University of North Dakota, Bayda signed a three-year contract with the Hurricanes and made his NHL debut on Feb. 14, 2003, midway through his first full professional season. He remained with the Hurricanes until the end of the 2002-03 season and had four goals and 10 assists (14 points) in 25 games. Despite playing just 53 games with Lowell last season, Bayda finished with the team leads in points (43) and assists (32). Bayda registered two assists in four of Carolina’s eight 2003 exhibition games before being reassigned to Lowell on Oct. 2.
Hurricanes finish their first of 17 back-to-back sets tonight at Boston’s FleetCenter against the Bruins, a game broadcast nationally by ESPN2. Following Saturday’s game at Philadelphia, the Hurricanes will return to the RBC Center for a Tuesday night meeting against San Jose. Individual game tickets for October and November games are available at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, at all TicketMaster locations or by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000.
