GAME NIGHT

The Carolina Hurricanes wrap up a two-game road swing against the defending Southeast Division champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Hurricanes had their six-game unbeaten string broken on Thursday night by the New York Rangers, 4-1 at Madison Square Garden. Saturday night’s game in Tampa Bay concludes a stretch in which the Hurricanes play six of seven games on the road. Carolina returns to the RBC Center on Sunday to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs and begin a stretch in which the team plays seven of eight games at home.

CAROLINA NOTES
Carolina netminder Kevin Weekes has his career-best shutout streak snapped by The Rangers’ Anson Carter at 18:07 of the first period on Thursday night, ending the streak at 183:16. The streak was the second-longest in franchise history, falling about 36 minutes short of Trevor Kidd’s record of 219:21, set from March 28 - April 8, 1998.

Forward Josef Vasicek scored his fourth goal in two games on Thursday and currently leads the team in goals (5), power-play goals (3) and points (8). Winger Jeff O’Neill assisted on Vasicek’s goal on Thursday and leads the team with six helpers and ranks second on the team with seven points (1g, 6a). O’Neill (10/23-10/30: 1g, 6) and rookie center Eric Staal (10/23-10/30: 1g, 4a) are each currently riding four-game point and assist streaks.

The Hurricanes and the Lightning meet for the first of six match-ups during the 2003-04 season. The teams will meet twice more at St. Pete Times Forum (1/15, 3/13) and three times at the RBC Center (11/9, 11/23, 3/10).

The Hurricanes went winless against Tampa Bay in 2002-03 for the first season in franchise history, notching just three points in the five games between the teams (0-2-2-1). Ron Francis led all Hurricanes in scoring against Tampa Bay last season with three points (1g, 2a) in five points. The Hurricanes are 23-15-8-1 all-time against the Lightning, including a 15-3-5-1 home mark and a 8-12-3-0 record in Tampa.
