CANES COMMUNITY DAY SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY

Players, Coaches and Staff to Visit Triangle-Area Schools and Hospitals

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 18, 2003) – Emma Bennett, Community Relations Manager for the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team will hold its annual "Canes Community Day" on Friday. Hurricanes players, coaches and staff will visit schools, health care facilities and other venues across the Triangle between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., prior to leaving for Boston.

"Canes community day is an outgrowth of the hospital visits that NHL teams historically take part in each year,” said Bennett. "We've grown the concept to embrace the diverse areas of our community by including schools, recreational programs, group homes and more."

This year, Hurricanes players will visit Duke Children’s Hospital, UNC Hospitals, the Cary Family YMCA and various Triangle-area schools, including Wildwood Elementary in Raleigh and Sparc Academy in Durham.

Head Coach Peter Laviolette will join Hurricanes captain Ron Francis and right wing Jeff O’Neill at the RBC Center to play hockey with children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Hurricanes Community Development Manager Doris Barksdale will oversee the day's events at the RBC Center.

"What a wonderful day to be able to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and offer this opportunity for kids not only to skate and have fun, but to meet the players," said Barksdale. "We're proud because our players care about the community, they love the kids and this is a chance to watch the kids interacting with the players, so it's a really wonderful thing."
