Goalie Arturs Irbe is back with the Hurricanes after a year in the minor leagues.
RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 17, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled goaltender Arturs Irbe from the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL.

Prior to Johnstown’s game Tuesday against the Peoria Rivermen, Irbe (5’ 8”, 190 lbs.) had posted a 9-3-1 record, 1.98 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage in 13 games with the Chiefs. Irbe, 37, was placed on Johnstown’s injured reserve list on Dec. 4 with an injured wrist, and was activated by the Chiefs last week before scoring a 4-3 overtime win at Toledo on Feb. 13. Irbe’s .931 save percentage ranks fourth among ECHL netminders this season.

Irbe is the Carolina franchise’s all-time goaltending leader in games played (299), wins (125) and shutouts (20), and his 2.49 goals-against average with the Hurricanes ranks third among all franchise netminders. The Riga, Latvia, native split 2002-03 between Carolina and the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliate, Lowell of the American Hockey League. In 34 NHL games last season, Irbe recorded a 7-24-2 record, 3.18 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage. While with Lowell, Irbe posted a 3-3-1 record and 2.95 goals-against average in seven games. In 2002, Irbe posted a 10-8 record and 2.11 goals-against average while playing in 18 of the Hurricanes’ 23 games en route to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Hurricanes continue their three-game home stand on Thursday at the RBC Center against the Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m., Fox Sports Net; Hurricanes Radio Network). Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes games are available at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, all TicketMaster locations, or by calling 919-834-4000.
