RALEIGH, N.C. (March 9, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that center Ron Francis has been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2005.

“This transaction was unexpected,” Rutherford said. “The decision was made by Ron in the last 24 hours that he wanted an opportunity to win the Stanley Cup.

“I can’t say enough about what Ron has done for our organization in the past six seasons. We wish him well in pursuit of the Cup this year.”

Francis, 41, has served as Carolina’s captain for the past four seasons, including the Hurricanes’ run to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals. Since rejoining the franchise when he signed as a free agent on July 13, 1998, Francis has scored 118 goals and notched 236 assists (354 points) in 472 regular-season games. In 2001-02, he led the team with 77 points and 50 assists en route to winning the Lady Byng and King Clancy Trophies. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native, who leads the Hurricanes franchise in every noteworthy offensive category, ranks fourth on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,788 points, second on the all-time assists list with 1,242, 20th on the all-time goal-scoring list with 546 and third on the NHL’s all-time games-played list with 1,719.

The Hurricanes host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday at the RBC Center to begin a two-game home stand that concludes Friday against Atlanta.
