HURRICANES REASSIGN TOMAS KURKA TO LOWELL

Winger Played One Game in Latest Recall to NHL

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 26, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned left wing Tomas Kurka to Lowell of the American Hockey League. Kurka played 6:40 in Carolina’s 3-2 win against Florida on Thursday following his March 24 recall.

The recall marked Kurka’s second stint with Carolina this season. The 22-year-old made his NHL season debut at New Jersey on Feb. 14, skated 12:29 and finished that game with a plus-1 rating. He has totaled 28 points (6g, 22a) in 46 games with Lowell this season. After registering no points in Lowell’s first eight games, Kurka was diagnosed with mononucleosis and missed 20 games before returning to the lineup and scoring six goals, 22 assists (28 points) and accumulating 12 penalty minutes in 38 games. In parts of three AHL seasons, he has scored 36 goals, earned 49 assists (85 points) and totaled 48 penalty minutes in 178 games. The Most, Czech Republic, native played in 14 games with Carolina during 2002-03, posting three goals and two assists (5 points) in his first NHL season. The Hurricanes selected Kurka in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The Hurricanes begin a two-game road trip on Saturday at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum against the Islanders, and will travel to Sunrise, Fla., following Saturday’s game for a Monday evening meeting with Florida. Carolina returns to the RBC Center on Tuesday to take on the Boston Bruins in the first game of a two-game home stand. Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes home games are available at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, at all TicketMaster locations or by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000.
