HURRICANES RECALL TOMAS KURKA FROM LOWELL

Winger Played One Game in Latest Recall to NHL

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 30, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled left wing Tomas Kurka from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Kurka will join the team for tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins at the RBC Center at 7 p.m.

The recall marks Kurka’s third stint with Carolina this season. The 22-year-old made his NHL season debut at New Jersey on Feb. 14, skated 12:29 and finished that game with a plus-1 rating. In his second recall, Kurka played 6:40 in Carolina’s 3-2 win against Florida on March 25. He has totaled 30 points (6g, 24a) in 48 games with Lowell this season. After registering no points in Lowell’s first eight games, Kurka was diagnosed with mononucleosis and missed 20 games before returning to the lineup and scoring six goals, 24 assists (30 points) and accumulating 12 penalty minutes in 40 games. In parts of three AHL seasons, he has scored 36 goals, earned 51 assists (87 points) and totaled 46 penalty minutes in 180 games. The Most, Czech Republic, native played in 14 games with Carolina during 2002-03, posting three goals and two assists (5 points) in his first NHL season. The Hurricanes selected Kurka in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The Hurricanes begin a two-game homestand on Tuesday at the RBC Center against the Bruins, and will host the New York Islanders in their final home game of the 2003-04 season on Friday at 7 p.m. Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes home games are available at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, at all TicketMaster locations or by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000.
