HURRICANES HIRE HELMS MULLISS & WICKER AS REPRESENTATION

North Carolina-based law firm will perform all legal work and consulting for team

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 20, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has hired the law firm Helms Mulliss & Wicker as its legal representation. The Hurricanes had previously worked with Kilpatrick Stockton LLP.

Helms Mulliss & Wicker comprises more than 95 lawyers, with offices in Raleigh, Charlotte and Wilmington. The firm offers a comprehensive range of legal services for corporations and other businesses. HMW has a distinguished record of providing high-quality, prompt and cost-effective services to its clients. The firm’s clients range from small technology start-ups to government entities, and many of the Southeast's largest industrial, service and financial organizations.

Helms Mulliss & Wicker traces its roots to 1922 when Fred B. Helms, fresh from Wake Forest Law School, opened his law office in Charlotte and began making a name for himself as a daunting courtroom advocate. He was soon joined by William F. Mulliss, a Harvard Law School graduate who over time became counsel to some of the region's leading businesses. During its eight decades, the firm has maintained its traditions of attracting and producing outstanding lawyers who are committed to serving their clients, to serving the Bar and to serving their communities. From Bar presidents to the federal bench, HMW has made giving back to the community a critical part of its mission.

Dennis A. Wicker heads the firm’s Raleigh office. Wicker is the leader of the firm's Government Relations practice in addition to working with the Public and Corporate Finance Teams. From 1993-2001, prior to joining the firm, he served two four-year terms as North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor. During his term of office he became the first statewide elected official to chair the State Board of Community Colleges, which sets policy for the state's 58-campus system. Governor Wicker was also a member of the State Board of Education and the State Board of Economic Development. He was a member of the N. C. House of Representatives for 12 years prior to becoming Lt. Governor and during the last 4 years he was elected House Majority Leader. Governor Wicker graduated Phi Beta Kappa, earning his undergraduate degree in economics with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
