RALEIGH, N.C. (May 6, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the Hurricanes have extended their affiliation with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) through the 2008-09 season. The five-year agreement includes an option following each season for either team to opt out of the affiliation. The Hurricanes have utilized Lowell as their top minor league affiliate for the past three seasons. The Calgary Flames also sent their top prospects to Lowell this past season, and will do so once again during the 2004-05 season.

“We have been very happy with our Lowell affiliation for the past three seasons,” said Rutherford. “Tom Rowe does an excellent job with our young prospects and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the Lock Monsters.”

A number of the Hurricanes’ younger prospects have spent time with Lowell over the past three seasons, including Pavel Brendl, Jaroslav Svoboda, Jesse Boulerice, Ryan Bayda, Mike Zigomanis, Allan Rourke and Bruno St. Jacques. Ron Smith, who is announcing his retirement from coaching, had served as Lowell’s head coach for each of the seasons the Hurricanes have been affiliated with the team. Tom Rowe will serve as the team’s new head coach.
