NHL RELEASES ORDER OF SELECTION FOR 2004 ENTRY DRAFT

Entry Draft at the RBC Center on June 26-27. The draft Hurricanes to pick five times on Draft’s opening day

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 16, 2004) – The National Hockey League today announced the final order of selection for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft to take place June 26-27 at the RBC Center. The Carolina Hurricanes will choose eighth overall and have a total of five picks in Rounds 1-3 on the Draft’s first day.

The Hurricanes have 12 picks in the Draft, including two in the second round, two in the third round and three in the fourth round. One of Carolina’s fourth-round picks includes an option for the Hurricanes to use Phoenix’s third-round pick in either 2005 or 2006 rather than Phoenix’s fourth-round pick this year as a part of the June 21, 2003, trade that sent David Tanabe and Igor Knyanev to the Coyotes in exchange for Danny Markov. Information on how each of Carolina’s picks was obtained is in the table below.

The Draft’s final order of selection is based mainly upon the final regular-season standings from 2003-04. The Washington Capitals improved their first-round draft position by winning the NHL Draft Lottery in April, moving from third to first overall. The Tampa Bay Lightning will choose 30th in the first round as the 2004 Stanley Cup champions. Twenty-one compensatory picks interspersed throughout Rounds 2-9, were awarded to teams based upon losing players to free agency during the 2003 offseason.

The Carolina Hurricanes will host the 2004 NHL is open to the public and tickets and parking to the event are free. The first three rounds of the NHL Entry Draft will begin Saturday, June 26 at 12 p.m., with the first round televised nationally in the United States on ESPN2 and in Canada on TSN/RDS. Free general admission section tickets to the Entry Draft are available through several different outlets. Fans can download tickets online at CarolinaHurricanes.com, or pick them up at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center or any retail location of The Eye team store. Fans may also pick up tickets at any North Carolina RBC Centura banking center or Triangle-area Harris Teeter store. In addition, tickets will be available the day of the event at the RBC Center.
