LOCAL ARTIST TO CREATE SPECIAL DRAFT-INSPIRED MURAL

Mixed-media piece will permanently reside in the RBC Center

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 21, 2004) – The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Raleigh-based artist Clark Hipolito will be creating a special piece of art entitled “Transition” in honor of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, which will take place at the RBC Center on June 26-27. Hipolito will create the 16-by-8 mural live at The Streets at Southpoint, located off of I-40 at exit 276 in Durham, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. He will complete the piece on Saturday during the special edition of the Caniac Carnival outside of the RBC Center.

“Transition” will be a mixed-media piece that combines actual sticks and pucks offset from a background of textured plastic and acrylic. Hipolito will use a pair of Eric Staal’s game-used skates to create the background texture. Through the artwork, the sticks will transition from a color that blends in with the background to a darker contrasting point. The final stick will be turned out, lower than the others and in a dominant color. According to Hipolito, the piece will be “a visual expression of the transitional nature of a player’s development, across the years of dedication to the sport of hockey, and leading up to the dream and goal of entering the NHL.”

Hipolito’s acrylic and plaster works are currently showing in New York City at the Chelsea Gallery and have been featured on television shows including HBO’s “Sex in the City” and WB’s “Dawson’s Creek.” A complete biography of the artist is attached to this release.

Tickets for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft at the RBC Center are available now. The draft is open to the public and tickets and parking to the event are free. The first three rounds of the NHL Entry Draft will begin Saturday, June 26 at 12 p.m., with the first round televised nationally in the United States on ESPN2 and in Canada on TSN/RDS. Free general admission section tickets to the Entry Draft are available through several different outlets. Fans can download tickets online at CarolinaHurricanes.com, or pick them up at the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center or any retail location of The Eye team store. Fans may also pick up tickets at any North Carolina RBC Centura banking center or Triangle-area Harris Teeter store. In addition, tickets will be available the day of the event at the RBC Center.

The Hurricanes and the National Hockey League will also be hosting a special edition of the Caniac Carnival presented by Progress Energy on June 26 beginning at 9 a.m. The free festival will feature autograph sessions with current Hurricanes players, a display featuring the Stanley Cup and all 17 NHL trophies, live music from local bands on the Best Buy Stage, inflatable games, interactive hockey attractions and obstacle courses, a trading card and memorabilia show, NHL Fantasy Games, a Hurricanes used hockey equipment sale and much more.
