>Creative Brief: Create a visual expression of the transitional nature of a players development across the years of dedication to the sport hockey leading up to the dream and goal of entering the NHL. In doing so create a stimulating, contemporary art installation that would be an enhancement to the public experience at the RBC Center.
RALEIGH, N.C. (June 21, 2004) – The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Raleigh-based artist Clark Hipolito will be creating a special piece of art entitled “Transition” in honor of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, which will take place at the RBC Center on June 26-27. Hipolito will create the 16-by-8 mural live at The Streets at Southpoint, located off of I-40 at exit 276 in Durham, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. He will complete the piece on Saturday during the special edition of the Caniac Carnival outside of the RBC Center.

“Transition” will be a mixed-media piece that combines actual sticks and pucks offset from a background of textured plastic and acrylic. Hipolito will use a pair of Eric Staal’s game-used skates to create the background texture. Through the artwork, the sticks will transition from a color that blends in with the background to a darker contrasting point. The final stick will be turned out, lower than the others and in a dominant color. According to Hipolito, the piece will be “a visual expression of the transitional nature of a player’s development, across the years of dedication to the sport of hockey, and leading up to the dream and goal of entering the NHL.”

Hipolito’s acrylic and plaster works are currently showing in New York City at the Chelsea Gallery and have been featured on television shows including HBO’s “Sex in the City” and WB’s “Dawson’s Creek.” A complete biography of the artist is attached to this release.
