RALEIGH, N.C. (July 1, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the Hurricanes have agreed to terms with defenseman Glen Wesley on a one-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were released.

"Glen has been a good player for our team for a long time," said Rutherford. "He is a proven team leader and has been very loyal to this organization. We are extremely happy that he has chosen to return with the Hurricanes."

Wesley, 35, completed his 17th NHL season and 10th with the Hurricanes franchise in 2003-04. He tallied six assists in 74 games for Carolina and led all Hurricanes in plus/minus at plus-18, ranked 15th among NHL defenseman. Wesley (6’ 1’’, 205 lbs.) earned an even or better plus/minus rating in 47 of his final 52 games of the season, recording a plus-18 rating over that time frame.

A native of Red Deer, Alb., Wesley is ranked third in franchise history in games played (703), just five games behind Kevin Dineen for second. He has notched 196 points (47g, 149a) and 466 penalty minutes during his 10 seasons with the franchise. Wesley has played 1,247 career NHL games with Boston, Toronto, Hartford and Carolina, totaling 506 points (124g, 382a) and 891 penalty minutes. Originally drafted third overall in the first round by the Boston Bruins in 1987, Wesley signed as a free agent with Carolina last July after being dealt by the Hurricanes to Toronto on March 9 in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
