HURRICANES SIGN PLAYER-FOR-A-DAY

Rick French and brother to skate with Eric Staal and Head Coach Peter Laviolette

French Brothers
We tried, but we couldn't find any stats on the newest Hurricanes, Pat and Rick French, who are all smiles in the Canes' locker room.
RALEIGH, N.C. (July 29, 2004) – As the Carolina Hurricanes’ sixth series of summer hockey camps winds down Friday, July 30, at the RecZone, Rick French and his brother Pat will take part in the team’s “Player-for-a-Day promotion. Rick French purchased the opportunity at the third-annual Kids ‘N Community Foundation Charity Wine Tasting in February.

The French brothers’ day as players will begin at 10 a.m. when they will arrive at the RBC Center and meet with President / General Manager Jim Rutherford. Rutherford will sign the duo to one-day contracts, they will receive Hurricanes jerseys and take a tour of the Hurricanes’ locker room, the RBC Center’s media areas and have player headshots taken by CanesVision.

After a short drive to the RecZone, Rick and Pat will consult with Equipment Manager Wally Tatomir before taking the ice with Hurricanes center Eric Staal and Head Coach Peter Laviolette. After the one-hour skating session, Rutherford will take the French brothers to lunch to wrap up their day as Hurricanes players.

The French brothers grew up in suburban Detroit, Mich., playing hockey on a pond under the floodlights of their parents’ and neighbors’ homes. Rick, 42, played bantam and junior hockey as a left wing before switching to defense with the club program at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

“If Chris Chelios can still play at 42, and Igor Larionov retired last year at 43, I think I have at least one good hour left in me before retiring from the NHL, joked Rick French.

The first professional game Rick attended was a Detroit Red Wings-Atlanta Flames matchup at the Olympia in Detroit, featuring Rutherford in goal for the Red Wings. While he still participates in the occasional adult-hockey game, Rick’s day job as president & chief executive officer of French/West/Vaughn – a $95 million communications firm – limits his ice time.

Pat French, 33, resides in the Detroit area where he was last season’s leading goal scorer in an A-level, in-line hockey league. Along with taking this past season’s goal-scoring title, Pat has also collected more than one Most Valuable Player awards while playing in-line hockey. By day, Pat works as an architectural engineer, but enjoys officiating in-line hockey games on weekends.

For more information about this promotion and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, please contact Community Relations Manager Emma Bennett via email at emmab@carolinahurricanes.com or by phone at 919-861-5467. RecZone is located at 912 Hodges Street in Raleigh.

The French brothers, Pat and Rick, sign their contracts and receive their Hurricanes jerseys from team President / General Manager Jim Rutherford.

Awaiting Rick and Pat were their own locker room stalls, and a meeting with CanesVision director Pete Soto to schedule their photo shoot.

The boys got their head shots taken, before heading to RecZone to get set up by Canes Equipment Manager Wally Tatomir.

Rick shares a laugh with Community Relations Manager Emma Bennett, before hitting the ice for a workout with Canes head coach Peter Laviolette and center Eric Staal.
