RALEIGH, N.C. (July 30, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Pavel Brendl on a one-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were announced.

"When Pavel joined the Hurricanes last season, he showed that he can be effective at this level," said Rutherford. "We hope that next season he can stay healthy and build on the good things he did last year."

Brendl, 23, was recalled to Carolina on Jan. 13 last season and scored five goals and earned three assists (8 points) in 18 NHL contests before suffering a fractured collarbone at Toronto on Feb. 23, and missing the season's final 21 games. The Opocno, Czech Republic, native began 2003-04 with the Hurricanes' American Hockey League affiliate Lowell Lock Monsters and notched 17 goals and 16 assists (33 points) in 33 games. He was named to the PlanetUSA team for the AHL All-Star Game, but did not play due to his recall to Carolina.

The New York Rangers drafted Brendl (6' 1", 204 lbs.) in the first round, fourth overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In three seasons with Calgary of the Western Hockey League prior to turning professional, he notched 172 goals, 148 assists (320 points) in 178 regular-season games, and led the WHL in goal-scoring twice. In 1998-99, he was named Canadian Major Junior Rookie of the Year and led Calgary to the Memorial Cup finals.

Brendl was traded to Philadelphia in the deal that sent Eric Lindros to the Rangers on Aug. 20, 2001. The Hurricanes acquired Brendl along with defenseman Bruno St. Jacques on Feb. 7, 2003, in exchange for Sami Kapanen and Ryan Bast.
