HURRICANES LAUNCH EXPANDED \u201CPICK UP A BOOK AND READ\u201D PROGRAM

Program grows from one grade-level and 32 schools, to three grade-levels and 50 schools

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 8, 2004) – The Carolina Hurricanes’ Kids ‘N Community Foundation today announced the launch of the 2004-05 “Pick Up a Book and Read program. As in years past, Hurricanes center Kevyn Adams will serve as the program’s spokesperson.

“I’m very excited about the ‘Pick Up a Book and Read’ program, said Adams. “Learning to read is something that’s important for everyone, and it’s something that I believe in as well. Any time you can be involved with kids and make an impact in their lives, it’s exciting.

“Pick Up a Book and Read was originally introduced in February 2001 as a partnership with Wake County Public Schools. Since its inception, the incentive-based reading program’s success has grown. For 2004-05, the program has been expanded and will now include third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at 50 schools, a jump from last year when 32 schools’ fourth-graders participated.

The program is designed to challenge students’ reading abilities, help to develop their reading skills and inspire children to read during their free time. Students are asked to record the number of pages they read on a daily basis and following a six-week period, the program concludes with incentive prizes for students that have shown dedication and hard work. All students are rewarded for successfully completing the program.

A page on the Hurricanes official website dedicated to the program will also be launched today, as a convenience to teachers in registering their classes. The website will also serve as the primary method for teachers to submit the program’s results.
