Defenseman selected by club 31st overall in 2003

he Hurricanes selected Richmond with the first pick of the second round (31st overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2004) – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed defenseman Danny Richmond to a three-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were released.

“We consider Danny one of our top prospects,� said Karmanos. “We are excited to have him signed. He is a good-skating, puck-moving defenseman who has a high skill level.�

Richmond, 20, played with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League in 2003-04, registering 13 goals and 22 assists (35 points), ranking him 17th in total points among all OHL defensemen. He ranked tied for fifth among OHL defensemen with 11 points (5g, 6a) in 15 postseason contests. It was the Chicago, IL, native’s first OHL season after playing one season at the University of Michigan in 2002-03.

The Hurricanes selected Richmond (6’ 0�, 175 lbs.) with the first pick of the second round (31st overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Following the 2001-02 season, he was named to the USHL’s First All-Star Team, All-Rookie Team and Rookie of the Year as a member of the Chicago Steel, when he registered nine goals and 45 assists (54 points) in the United States’ top junior-hockey league.
