LAVIOLETTE TO RUN HURRICANES HOLIDAY HOCKEY CLINIC

December version of youth hockey school is in its third year

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 11, 2004) – The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that head coach Peter Laviolette will design and run the Hurricanes’ third annual holiday hockey clinic, to take place from Dec. 27 – 29 at the RecZone. Hockey players from the N.C. State University Club Hockey team as well as instructors from the Hurricanes Summer Hockey School will assist Laviolette at the clinic.

The clinic is broken into three age groups. Players ages six and under take to the ice from 8:30 a.m. – 9:40 a.m. each day. Players between the ages of seven and nine skate from 9:50 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Players between the ages of 10 and 12 will be on the ice from 11:10 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.

"I'm going to enjoy it and I know the kids will get a lot out of it,” said Laviolette. “It's going to be a camp where hopefully in a short period of time, through repetition, they become better at certain things and they have a smile on their face."

Hockey skating experience is required for all participants. Clinic activities will feature an intense review of the fundamentals of hockey, including skating, puck handling, passing and shooting.

Laviolette completed his first season as the Hurricanes’ head coach in 2003-04, and his fourth season at the helm of an NHL team. After being named the franchise’s 11th head coach on Dec. 15, 2003, Laviolette scored a 2-1 overtime victory against Pittsburgh at the RBC Center in his Hurricanes coaching debut on Dec. 18, 2003. Under Laviolette, Carolina posted a 20-22-6-4 record in its final 52 games of 2003-04. Prior to joining the Hurricanes, Laviolette coached two seasons with the New York Islanders. As head coach of the Islanders during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, Laviolette led the team to the playoffs both seasons after the Islanders missed the postseason seven straight times between 1994 and 2001.

Laviolette played 11 seasons of professional hockey, mostly in the AHL and IHL. Along with his successes in the AHL and IHL, Laviolette also played 12 games with the New York Rangers during the 1988-89 season. The Franklin, MA, native was a member of the 1988 and 1994 United States Olympic hockey teams, and captained the 1994 Olympic squad. In the summer of 2004, Laviolette served as head coach for Team USA at the World Championships in the Czech Republic, guiding the American squad to an upset over the host Czech Republic in the quarterfinals and a bronze medal in the tournament. Laviolette also served as an Assistant Coach for Team USA in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, helping the Americans reach the semifinals.
