HURRICANES TO HONOR RALEIGH-BASED YOUTH TEAM

East Coast Eagles Captured Southeast Title, Heading to Nationals

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 23, 2004) – The Carolina Hurricanes will honor the East Coast Eagles, the Raleigh-based Pee Wee Major team that will represent the Southeast in the U.S. National Championships, at the team’s final practice before heading to the national tournament. Hurricanes coaches Kevin McCarthy and Jeff Daniels will be on hand at the Garner Ice House on Monday, March 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. to congratulate the team on its accomplishments and wish the players well for the national tournament. The East Coast Eagles are the first team based in the Carolinas to ever capture a district championship.

The Tier II 12-and-under National Championship will be held in Voorhees, N.J., from March 30 through April 3. The tournament’s 12 teams are broken into four divisions in the opening round. Also in the Eagles’ division will be Littleton, CO, the team supported by NHL great Patrick Roy, and the Biddleford Ice Warriors, who represent New England.

The Eagles won the right to represent the Southeast District by defeating the Frederick (VA) Fury in the District Championship game 9-1. The Eagles defeated their opponents in the District Tournament, held the weekend of March 12 in Nashville, by a combined score of 29-8 in winning all five of their games. Prior to districts, the Eagles had to win a regional tournament in Charleston, S.C. to earn the Carolina Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) title.

The success of the East Coast Eagles comes just weeks after the Carolina Hurricanes representative at the Quebec International Hockey Pee Wee Tournament completed the most successful tournament run in their history. The Junior Hurricanes, comprised of 18 players between the ages of 11 and 13 from North Carolina and South Carolina, compiled an overall record of 7-1-1 and a 4-1 tournament record in reaching the winners’ bracket final of the prestigious tournament. Eight members of the East Coast Eagles were also members of the Junior Hurricanes – Tim Acker, Ross Whitehead, Sean Murphy, Mark Essery, Troy Slider, Wes Beck and Kenneth Gillespie.
