NHL, HURRICANES ANNOUNCE 2005-06 SCHEDULE
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today released the team's schedule for the 2005-06 National Hockey League season. The Hurricanes will open their 82-game regular season schedule on Oct. 5 at St. Pete Times Forum against defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay before returning to Raleigh to play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, Oct. 7, at the RBC Center.

The 2005-06 home schedule features Carolina in four match-ups against each of its Southeast Division rivals – Atlanta, Florida, Tampa Bay and Washington. The Hurricanes will host the other 10 Eastern Conference teams twice during the season.

With the NHL's new scheduling format, the Hurricanes will play home games against each of the Western Conference's Central Division teams, including a Jan. 10, tilt against the Detroit Red Wings. Carolina will play road games against each team in the Pacific Division in early December as a part of the new scheduling format. The Hurricanes will not face opponents from the Northwest Division at home or on the road this season.

The Hurricanes will play 13 back-to-back sets in 2005-06, the fewest number of back-to-back sets the team has faced since moving to North Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season. Carolina's longest home stand will come in December when it hosts Chicago, Columbus, New Jersey, Tampa Bay and Florida, Dec. 13-23, in a five-game span. The Hurricanes will play six consecutive road games, Nov. 29-Dec. 10, their longest stretch away from the RBC Center.
