RALEIGH, NC – Today at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, Ont., Carolina Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford stepped to the podium at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and announced that the team had selected defenseman Jack Johnson with the third overall pick. Johnson becomes the highest-drafted defenseman for the Hurricanes organization since Chris Pronger was selected second overall in 1993.

“We really like Jack Johnson and the aggressive, hard-nosed style that he plays,” said Rutherford. “He will help build our organization’s defense to complement the young forwards and good young goaltender we have.”

In June, USA Hockey included Johnson, 18, on a list of 43 invitees to its evaluation camp for the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship team, set to take place Aug. 5-14, in Lake Placid, NY. Johnson played the 2004-05 season with the United States National Under-18 Development team, and posted 14 goals, 27 assists (41 points) in 42 games, while accumulating 170 penalty minutes. Also in 2004-2005, Johnson helped the United States to championships at the Five Nations Tournament, Compuware Four Nations Cup and the 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships.

In 2003-04, Johnson (6’ 1”, 201 lbs.) registered 15 goals and 21 assists (36 points), and totaled 171 penalty minutes in 60 games with the National Team Development Program’s Under-17 squad. Prior to joining the NTDP, Johnson played two seasons at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep School alongside 2005 first-overall pick (Pittsburgh Penguins) Sidney Crosby.

The Indianapolis, Ind., native’s father, Jack, Sr., played for the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers, and was a member of the 1973 NCAA Championship team at the University of Wisconsin.
