CAROLINA HURRICANES SIGN DEFENSEMAN CHRIS HAJT
Former second-round pick has appeared in NHL games with Edmonton and Washington

RALEIGH, NC – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the Hurricanes have agreed to terms with defenseman Chris Hajt (HIGHT) on a one-year contract which will pay him $450,000 at the NHL level or $60,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level.

“Chris is a character guy who brings experience and depth to our organization,” said Karmanos.

Hajt, 27, split last season between Portland of the AHL and Augusta of the ECHL. He totaled three goals and six assists (9 points) along with 16 penalty minutes in 53 games with Portland. In 12 games with Augusta, Hajt (6’3’’ 206 lbs.) tallied one goal and four assists (5 points) and eight penalty minutes.

Drafted by Edmonton in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Hajt has totaled 78 points (19g, 59a) and 278 penalty minutes in 417 career AHL games in the Edmonton and Washington minor-league systems. He made his NHL debut with the Oilers on Oct. 11, 2000 at Detroit, and has also played five NHL games with the Capitals. Though born in Saskatoon, Sask., Hajt, the son of long-time Sabres defenseman Bill Hajt, grew up in the Buffalo area and represented the United States at the World Junior Championships in 1997 and 1998. He helped Team USA capture the silver medal in 1997 and served as the team’s co-captain in the 1998 World Junior Championships.
