LADD NOTCHES FOUR POINTS IN CANES ROOKIE VICTORY
'Canes defeat Panthers 5-2 in first game of tournament

OTTAWA, Ont. -
The Carolina Hurricanes played their first game of the 2005 Ottawa Senators NHL Rookie Tournament on Tuesday at Ottawa's Corel Centre, and skated away with a 5-2 win against the Florida Panthers. Andrew Ladd, the Hurricanes' first-round (4th overall) draft pick in 2004, notched two goals and had two assists to lead Carolina's squad.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead when Ladd won a battle behind Florida's net and got the puck to defenseman Jakub Vojta, a fourth-round pick of the 'Canes in the 2005 draft. Vojta swung the puck to free-agent tryout and former Western Michigan standout Vince Bellissimo who banged it past Florida goaltender David Shantz. Later in the period, Ladd got the puck to Bellissimo who found linemate and Michigan State alumnus Kevin Estrada in the slot. Estrada beat Shantz on a one timer to put Carolina ahead 2-0.

In the second frame, Ladd, Bellissimo and Estrada wasted no time extending the lead to 3-0 when Ladd scored his first of two goals - the eventual game-winner - just 45 seconds into the period. Florida scored twice to bring the game to 3-2 on goals by defenseman Martin Lojek and forward Joel Ward, but free-agent tryout Mark Stathopoulos closed the period's scoring when he banged home a pass from defenseman Danny Richmond (Carolina's second-round, 31st overall, choice in 2003) to put Carolina ahead 4-2. Ladd closed the game with an empty-net goal to wrap up a four-point night in his first game wearing Hurricanes red.

Justin Peters, the Hurricanes' second-round (38th overall) choice in the 2004 draft, started the game in net and stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced in the game's first 29:51. Kevin Nastiuk, Carolina's fourth-round (126th overall) selection from 2003, replaced Peters near the game's halfway point and stopped 19 of 20 Panthers' shots.

The Hurricanes' rookie squad will next face the Toronto Maple Leafs' rookie team, led by former Carolina coach Paul Maurice, now coach of the Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Faceoff is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Corel Centre. Please visit CarolinaHurricanes.com for further updates from Ottawa.

Notes: Bellissimo led the Hurricanes with a plus-four rating, while linemates Estrada and Ladd and defenseman Richmond posted plus-three marks - Bellissimo also led the Hurricanes, winning 11 of 16 faceoffs (69%) -Carolina out-shot Florida 44 to 28 on the game… Despite five power plays between the teams, neither squad converted with an extra attacker, though the Hurricanes - first goal was scored four-on-four as Florida defenseman Ryan Stephenson and Estrada each served minor penalties.
