\'CANES, LADD AGREE TO 3-YEAR ENTRY LEVEL CONTRACT
First-Round Pick from 2004 Receives Maximum Rookie Terms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Sept. 27, 2005

RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Andrew Ladd on a three-year contract. The Hurricanes selected Ladd in the first-round, fourth overall, in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft, held at the RBC Center, June 26-27, 2004.

"We're very pleased to have Andrew signed," said Rutherford. "He is a big, strong, aggressive player who should develop into a power forward who will play an important role in the future success of our franchise."

Andrew Ladd (right), shown talking with captain Rod Brind'Amour during the Hurricanes' preseason opener against Washington, was Carolina's first-round pick in 2004.

Ladd, 19, will receive $688,940 at the NHL level in the first two years of the contract, and $984,200 in the third year, the maximum rookie salary figures for players drafted in 2004 under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. In addition to his salary, Ladd receives a signing bonus of $590,520, to be paid in the first two years of the contract, and has the potential to earn the maximum entry-level performance bonuses, totaling $850,000 per year. The contract is a two-way contract, allowing Ladd to play in the American Hockey League at the rate of $70,300 per season.

In 2004-05, Ladd (6"2"?, 201 lbs.) played his final season of junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. In 65 regular-season games, Ladd finished third on the team in scoring with 45 points (19g, 26a) while accumulating a team-high 167 penalty minutes. In the 2005 postseason, Ladd played in all 12 of Calgary"s games and led the team with seven goals. He added four postseason assists to rank second on the team in playoff scoring (11 points). Ladd played his first season of major junior hockey in 2003-04 when he led the Hitmen with 30 goals, finished tied for the team lead with 75 points and finished second on the team with 119 penalty minutes. In Calgary"s seven 2004 postseason contests, he led the team with six assists and seven points. In January, Ladd won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, ND, and Thief River Falls, Minn. In Canada"s six games, Ladd scored three goals and added four assists (7 points), and finished the tournament ranked second with a plus-11 plus/minus rating.

Earlier this month, the Maple Ridge, B.C., native led the Hurricanes" squad at the 2005 Ottawa Senators NHL Rookie Tournament with a tournament-best four goals and seven points in four games. The Hurricanes" rookie team faced teams of draft picks and free-agent tryouts representing the Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, and finished second in the round-robin tournament with a 3-1-0 record.

The Hurricanes' 2005 training camp continues Wednesday with practice and workouts at the RecZone beginning at 10:30 a.m. before the team departs Wednesday afternoon for Florida. Carolina plays its final two games of the 2005 preseason at Florida on Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Tampa Bay on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricanes open the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Tampa Bay before returning to Raleigh for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, Oct. 7.
