HURRICANES RECALL KEVIN NASTIUK FROM LOWELL
Martin Gerber is day-to-day with a hip injury

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Oct. 6, 2005

RALEIGH, NC –
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the Hurricanes have recalled goaltender Kevin Nastiuk (NAZ-tee-uhk) from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Nastiuk was sent to the Lock Monsters’ training camp from the Hurricanes’ training camp on Sept. 23, but will now rejoin the team on emergency conditions after Martin Gerber suffered a hip injury in Wednesday’s season opener at Tampa Bay. To make room for Nastiuk, the Hurricanes placed forward Ray Whitney on the injured reserve list retroactive to Oct. 3. Whitney has a groin strain.

The Hurricanes selected Nastiuk, 20, with their fourth pick, 126th overall, in the fourth round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The Edmonton, Alb., native recorded a 63-37-9 record in his last two seasons with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League, helping the Tigers to two consecutive Central Division titles. In that span Nastiuk posted a 2.55 goals-against average while playing in 110 regular-season games.

The Hurricanes will play their home opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Select parking lots at the RBC Center will open at noon, and all parking lots will be open by 4:30 p.m. for pre-game festivities beginning at 4:45 p.m. Individual game tickets for all Hurricanes games in October and November are available at the RBC Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, at CarolinaHurricanes.com and by calling 919-834-4000. Only a limited amount of individual-game tickets remain for Opening Night.
