'CANES TO ACTIVATE RAY WHITNEY FROM INJURED RESERVE

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team will activate left wing Ray Whitney from injured reserve prior to tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center. Whitney has missed the first six Hurricanes regular-season games with a groin injury suffered during training camp.
The Hurricanes signed Whitney to a two-year contract on Aug. 6. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alb., native has played in 700 NHL games in 13 seasons with San Jose, Edmonton, Florida, Columbus and Detroit, collecting 205 goals, 330 assists (535 points) and 219 penalty minutes. In 2003-04, Whitney (5’10”, 180 lbs.) scored 14 goals and had 29 assists (43 points) in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings. Whitney, 33, played in two of Carolina’s eight exhibition games during the 2005 preseason and finished with an even plus/minus rating.
The Carolina Hurricanes finish a three-game road swing tonight against the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center, at 7 p.m. (Fox Sports Net, Hurricanes Radio Network). Following the game, the Hurricanes will return to Raleigh for a three-game home stand at the RBC Center against Ottawa (10/24, 7 p.m.), Boston (10/26, 7 p.m.) and Philadelphia (7 p.m.).
