ERIC STAAL NAMED NHL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Staal is first player since 1980 to earn Player of the Month honors for Hurricanes franchise

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
- Nov. 1, 2005
Eric Staal led the NHL in scoring during the month of October with 22 points in 11 games.

RALEIGH, NC – The National Hockey League today announced that Hurricanes center Eric Staal has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Month for October. Staal led the NHL in scoring during the month of October, earning 22 points in 11 games and helping the Hurricanes to the best start in franchise history (8-2-1) and first place in the Southeast Division and Eastern Conference. Staal is the first player to earn Player of the Month honors for the Hurricanes franchise since Mike Rogers in December 1980.

Staal capped his breakout month in October with a career-high four assists on his 21st birthday on Oct. 29 in Pittsburgh, one day after he scored a career-high three goals against the Philadelphia Flyers at the RBC Center. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native was tied for third in the NHL in both goals (9) and assists (13) and finished the month ranked second in the league in shots on goal (54) and tied for fifth in plus/minus (+8). Staal carries a career-high six game point streak (10/20-10/29: 4g, 10a) into November.

Staal began the 2005-06 NHL campaign on a four-game goal-scoring streak, the longest such streak for any Hurricanes player to start a season since the team relocated to North Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season, and just one game shy of the franchise record set by Kevin Dineen in 1992. He scored the Hurricanes’ first goal at the RBC Center for 2005-06 when he beat Pittsburgh netminder Sebastien Caron 11:59 into the first period on Oct. 7. On Oct. 12 against Washington, the third-year pro had his first NHL four-point and three-assist game as the Hurricanes downed the Capitals 7-2. Staal repeated his three-assist performance on Oct. 20 at the Air Canada Centre in Carolina’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In total, he had six multi-point games, two multi-goal games and four multi-assist games during the month of October.

Selected by the Hurricanes with the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Staal has at least one point in 10 of Carolina’s 11 games this season. In 92 career regular-season NHL games, he has tallied 20 goals and 33 assists (53 points).

The Hurricanes begin their 13-game November schedule on Thursday when Jeff O’Neill and the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the RBC Center (7 p.m., Fox Sports Net, Hurricanes Radio Network). Individual game tickets for all Hurricanes games in November, December and January, including Ron Francis Retirement Night on Jan. 28, are available at the RBC Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, at CarolinaHurricanes.com and by calling 919-834-4000.
