Tonight's Game
The Southeast Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes visit the San Jose Sharks on Saturday (10:30 p.m. ET, FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network) for the fifth of five consecutive road games against Pacific Division teams. The Hurricanes are in the midst of a six-game road swing - the team's longest stretch of games away from Raleigh this season - that began with a 4-3 overtime win at Atlanta on Nov. 29. Carolina suffered a 5-4 shootout loss at Dallas on Dec. 2 and fell 8-4 at Phoenix on Dec. 3, before scoring wins at Anaheim (Dec. 6, 6-2) and Los Angeles (Dec. 8, 3-2).

Carolina has won 15 of its last 22 games, dating back to a 4-0 win at Washington on Oct. 22. With 38 points in their first 28 regular-season games, the Hurricanes are off to their best start in franchise history, eclipsing the previous first-28-games record of 34 points, accomplished in 1986-87 and 1996-97.

Carolina Notes
Hurricanes center Eric Staal, who was named NHL Offensive Player of the Month for October, currently leads the Hurricanes and was ranked tied for third in the league with 41 points through games of Dec. 8. Staal has notched points in all but five of the Hurricanes' 28 games this season, and had a career-high 10-game points streak (10/20-11/11: 7g, 12a) prior to the Hurricanes' Nov. 12 shutout loss against Atlanta. He ranked fourth in the league with 20 goals and tied for fifth in the league with two shorthanded goals through games of Dec. 8.

Carolina Hurricanes right wing Justin Williams had his career-best nine-game points streak (11/15-12/2: 6g, 7a) snapped at Phoenix on Dec. 3, but rebounded with a goal and an assist in Carolina's game at Anaheim on Dec. 6, and a goal on Dec. 8 at Los Angeles, giving him points in 11 of the last 12 games (11/15-12/8: 8g, 8a). Williams is in his second season with the Hurricanes after being acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for defenseman Danny Markov on Jan. 20, 2004. In 60 games with Carolina, Williams has amassed 17 goals and 24 assists (41 points) along with 56 penalty minutes.

Through games of Dec. 8, Hurricanes netminder Martin Gerber's .919 save percentage ranked seventh in the league and his 2.53 goal-against average ranked 10th. Gerber made 35 saves in each of Carolina's last two games.
