HURRICANES ACQUIRE KRYS KOLANOS FROM PHOENIX
Former first-round pick acquired in exchange for Pavel Brendl

RALEIGH, NC -- Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired center Krys Kolanos (KRIHS koh-LA-nohs) from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for right wing Pavel Brendl. Kolanos will be assigned to the Hurricanes' top minor league affiliate, Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL).

"Krystofer is a skilled center who adds depth to our organization at an important position," said Rutherford. "He has NHL experience at a young age and will help Lowell immediately."

Kolanos, 24, has split this season between Phoenix and Edmonton of the NHL and San Antonio of the AHL. He registered three points (2g, 1a) in nine games with the Coyotes before being claimed off waivers by Edmonton on Nov. 11. He played six games with the Oilers before being re-claimed by Phoenix and reassigned to San Antonio. He notched one assist in three games with San Antonio.

Kolanos, a first-round pick (19th overall) of the Coyotes at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft in his hometown of Calgary, has scored 35 points (17g, 18a) in 115 career NHL games. He led all rookies in game-winning goals during his rookie NHL season in 2001-02, and ranked eighth among all rookies in goals for the season with 11. He was the NHL Rookie of the Month in Nov. 2001, and participated in the inaugural NHL YoungStars Game during NHL All Star Weekend. After missing most of the 2002-03 season with an injury, he won a gold medal as part of Team Canada at the 2003 World Championships in Finland. Kolanos split the 2003-04 season between Phoenix and Springfield, and spent the 2004-05 season with teams in Finland and Germany.

Prior to beginning his professional career, Kolanos was a standout player for Boston College, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Eagles the 2001 NCAA Championship, their first title in 52 years. His overtime winner capped a season in which he scored 50 points (25g, 25a) in 41 games as a sophomore, earning All-American recognition.

Pavel Brendl

Brendl, 24, was originally acquired by Carolina in Feb. 2003 from Philadelphia along with Bruno St. Jacques in exchange for Sami Kapanen and Ryan Bast. In 26 games for the Hurricanes, he tallied nine points (5g, 4a). He has played for Lowell all of the 2005-06 season, notching 13 points (6g, 7a) in 25 games.

The Carolina Hurricanes conclude a two-game road trip on Wednesday at Ottawa (7:30 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network), before returning home to face the Philadelphia Flyers at the RBC Center on Thursday (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network). The Flyers game is the start of a four-game home stand for Carolina which includes contests against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 31 (8 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network), the Atlanta Thrashers on Jan. 4 (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network) and the New York Islanders on Jan. 6 (7 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network).
