ERIC STAAL NAMED NHL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Center notched second hat trick of career, season on Sunday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Jan. 16, 2006

RALEIGH, NC – The National Hockey League today announced that Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. Staal notched three goals and four assists and was plus-3 this past week to help the Hurricanes defeat the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues, complete the team’s sweep of the Central Division, continue its seven-game winning streak and move into first place in the NHL with 64 points.

Staal earned two assists in the Hurricanes’ 3-2 win against Detroit on Jan. 10 and had one helper in the team’s 5-4 overtime win against Nashville on Jan. 13. On Sunday, the 21-year-old notched his second career hat trick and earned an assist for his third four-point game this season. Staal currently ranks tied for fourth in the NHL with 29 goals, seventh with 59 points, tied for third with three shorthanded goals and tied for sixth with 12 power-play goals this season.

Selected by the Hurricanes with the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Staal now has at least one point in 33 of Carolina’s 44 games this season. In 125 career regular-season NHL games, he has tallied 39 goals and 51 assists (90 points). Staal received NHL Offensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season when he had four goals, six assists (10 points) and was plus-5 in four games between Oct. 24 and Oct. 30.

The Carolina Hurricanes travel to Philadelphia for a Tuesday night match up against the Flyers (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network) before returning to Raleigh to face the New York Islanders on Thursday (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network). Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes home games, including Ron Francis Retirement Night on Jan. 28, can be purchased at the RBC Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, by calling 919-834-4000 or via CarolinaHurricanes.com.
