KRUEGER, McALPINE JOIN HURRICANES SCOUTING STAFF
First-year winger to spend Olympic Break with AHL club

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 28, 2006

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Ralph Krueger and Chris McAlpine have joined the team’s scouting staff. Krueger will focus his scouting efforts on amateur and professional players in Europe and McAlpine will concentrate on amateur hockey in Minnesota.

“The additions of Ralph and Chris give our scouting staff knowledgeable personnel in two of the world’s key hockey areas,” said Rutherford. “Their input will assist in making player decisions and in drafting future players for the Hurricanes.”

Krueger served as head coach of Team Switzerland at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, and helped the Swiss team reach the tournament’s quarterfinal round. After playing more than 10 seasons of professional hockey in Europe, Kreuger, 46, began his coaching career and has coached the Swiss team since 1997, helping it become a regular competitor in international play. Krueger is joining the Hurricanes' scouting staff on a part-time basis and will remain in his full-time position with Team Switzerland.

McAlpine is a former NHL defenseman who played in 289 NHL games with New Jersey, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles, registering six goals, 24 assists (30 points) and 245 penalty minutes. The 34-year old Roseville, Minn., native was selected by New Jersey (137th overall) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft and turned professional following a four-year career at the University of Minnesota. Following his senior season at Minnesota, McAlpine was named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s first All-Star team and named a second team NCAA All-American.
