GAME NOTES: Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers

Wednesday's Game

The Carolina Hurricanes travel to Sunrise, Fla., for a Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. meeting against the Florida Panthers at BankAtlantic Center (FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network). Wednesday’s game marks the second game in Carolina’s current seven-game road swing and the team’s second game this season against a Southeast Division opponent.

The Hurricanes enter Wednesday’s game with a 0-2-1 record after earning a point against Buffalo in the season opener on Oct. 4 in a shootout loss, and then suffering losses against New Jersey and at Washington. Following Wednesday’s game, the Hurricanes will travel to Atlanta for a Friday night match up against the Thrashers and then travel on to Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay before returning to Raleigh.

Carolina Notes

The Hurricanes went winless in their first three games of 2006-07, earning just one point in the standings for their Oct. 4 shootout loss against Buffalo. In 2005-06, the Hurricanes went winless in three straight games on three separate occasions – Nov. 19-22, Dec. 26-29 and March 8-11 – en route to a 52-22-8 record, the Southeast Division title and the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

The last five Stanley Cup champions, prior to the Hurricanes – Colorado (2001), Detroit (2002), New Jersey (2000, 2003) and Tampa Bay (2004) – posted a combined 6-7-2 record in their first three games of the next regular seasons, but posted a 3-1-1 combined record in their fourth games.

Against the Panthers

Wednesday marks the first of eight 2006-07 regular-season meetings between the Hurricanes and the Panthers, and the first of four meetings between the teams this season at BankAtlantic Center. The teams will next meet on Dec. 23, the last game before the NHL’s two-day holiday break.

Last season the Hurricanes posted a 6-1-1 record in eight games against the Panthers, and went 4-0-0 in the teams’ four meetings at the RBC Center. Eric Staal led all scorers with 11 points (4g, 7a) in the eight-game season series, while Olli Jokinen posted 10 points (5g, 5a) for Florida. The Hurricanes hold a 26-20-12-1 all-time record against the Panthers, with a 17-9-3 home mark and a 9-11-9-1 record in South Florida.
