HURRICANES HIRE JOHNSON AS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
Raleigh native will lead all marketing and promotions efforts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Jan. 4, 2007

RALEIGH, NC—
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has hired Curt Johnson as its new Director of Marketing. Johnson, who comes to the team from the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer, will be responsible for all of the team’s efforts in marketing campaigns and will oversee CanesVision, CanesDesign, game-night promotions, youth hockey and fan development.

Johnson served as General Manager of the Kansas City Wizards for the past seven years, overseeing both the franchise’s business operations and team management, and helping Kansas City become one of the most successful Major League Soccer franchises both on the field and off. He helped lead Kansas City to the MLS Cup Championship and Supporter's Shield in 2000, and both the U.S. Open Cup and Western Conference Championship in 2004. Johnson re-vamped all sales and marketing initiatives, while providing strategic and operational leadership, helping the Wizards become the first organization in the history of Major League Soccer to record five consecutive years of paid attendance growth. He oversaw a ticket sales staff which tripled the team’s season ticket base from 2000-2004, and worked closely with team ownership, Major League Soccer, state, city and county officials over the past five years to gain funding and support for a new world-class soccer stadium and youth soccer complex in Kansas City. Most recently, Johnson helped to orchestrate one of the most lucrative team sales in the history of Major League Soccer.

Prior to joining Kansas City, Johnson served as the Vice President and General Manager of the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer League from 1998-99. Before making the jump to the front office, Johnson was an assistant men's soccer coach for his alma mater, North Carolina State University, during the 1996 season, and was an assistant coach for the Raleigh Flyers, formerly of the A-League, in 1995. From 1992-94 he served as the Midwest region's Marketing Director for adidas. The Raleigh native received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication from North Carolina State University in 1991. On the soccer field, Johnson was a four-year defensive starter at NC State and was team captain his senior year when the Wolfpack won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in 1990. Johnson is a graduate of Ravenscroft School in Raleigh and served as the school’s Director of Alumni Affairs from 1994-95.
