RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed Greg Stefan to a multi-year contract. Stefan, the Hurricanes’ goaltending coach and pro scout for the past two seasons, will now hold the title of Assistant Coach and Goaltending Coach, and he will relocate to the Triangle from his home in the Detroit area.

“Greg has been an integral part of our coaching staff for the past two seasons,” said Rutherford. “He has worked well in helping develop our organization’s goaltenders, and we look forward to having him in Carolina on a full-time basis.”

Stefan, 45, played nine seasons as a netminder in the NHL and works with all of the goaltenders in the Hurricanes system. Stefan began his coaching career in 1993 as an assistant coach for the Detroit Jr. Red Wings, who later became the Plymouth Whalers. Stefan served as the team’s assistant coach through 1998 and rejoined the Whalers in 2003 as assistant coach and director of player development. Originally from Brantford, Ont., Stefan played nine NHL seasons with Detroit after being selected by the Red Wings in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Stefan compiled a career record of 115-127-30 with a 3.92 goals-against average for Detroit. He suffered a career-ending knee injury in a game against Edmonton on Nov. 25, 1989.
