Defenseman is the only original Hurricane left from 1997-98 squad

WESLEY
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Glen Wesley in a one-year contract. The deal will pay Wesley $1.4 million in 2007-08.

“Glen had an outstanding season last year, and continues to be a steadying force on our blueline,” said Rutherford. “His leadership is important to the fabric of our dressing room and we are glad he is returning to play another season.”

Wesley, 38, completed his 19th NHL season and 12th with the Hurricanes franchise in 2006-07, ranking first on the team in plus/minus (+11) and second in blocked shots (103). An alternate captain for Carolina, he totaled one goal and 12 assists (13 points), along with 56 penalty minutes in 68 games played.

Wesley (6’1’’, 205 lbs.) has notched 127 goals and 402 assists (529 points) and totaled 993 penalty minutes in 1,379 career NHL games with Boston, Toronto and the Carolina franchise. He ranks second in franchise history in games played (835) and 11th in assists (169). Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the first round (3rd overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Wesley has totaled 52 points (15g, 37a) in 169 career playoff games, including four trips to the Stanley Cup Finals and one Stanley Cup title (2006).
