Canes Name MacDonald Director Of Amateur Scouting

Sheldon Ferguson resigns, accepts GM position with Saginaw

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today named Tony MacDonald the team’s Director of Amateur Scouting. MacDonald succeeds Sheldon Ferguson who has accepted the General Manager position with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League after serving 12 years as the Hurricanes organization’s head amateur scout.

“Tony has an eye for talent at the amateur level and has been scouting young players for a long time,” said Rutherford. “His longevity with the organization and his knowledge of the game make him a natural fit for this position.

“We thank Sheldon Ferguson for his years of good service to the Hurricanes organization, and we wish him well with Saginaw.”

MacDonald has served as an amateur scout for the Carolina franchise since 1994, and has worked closely with Rutherford since 1984. He was the Windsor Spitfires’ (OHL) Director of Scouting from 1982-88 when he joined the Los Angeles Kings’ scouting staff. After two seasons with the Kings, MacDonald returned to the OHL in an advisor position with the Guelph Storm until joining the Hurricanes franchise.
