Hurricanes Reassign Mormina to Albany

Defenseman made NHL debut on Thursday in 4-2 win against Pittsburgh

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned defenseman Joey Mormina to Albany of the American Hockey League. Mormina was recalled on Thursday and made his NHL debut that night in Carolina’s 4-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, registering four hits in 7:45 of ice time.

Mormina, 25, joined the Hurricanes organization as a free agent in July 2007. The Montreal, Que., native has scored two goals and earned four assists (6 points), while accumulating 70 penalty minutes in 51 games with Albany this season. Mormina (6’6”, 220 lbs.) signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings, and skated two seasons with the Kings’ AHL affiliate, Manchester, following a four-year collegiate career at Colgate. Philadelphia drafted Mormina in the sixth round, 193rd overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
