Canes to Honor Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones

RALEIGH, NC—Jon Chase, Director of Promotions and Fan Development Marketing for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team will honor Olympic gold-medal-winning swimmer Cullen Jones before and during the team’s game on Saturday, Nov. 1, against the Edmonton Oilers. Jones, a four-time ACC champion and 2006 NCAA champion freestyle swimmer at North Carolina State University, won a gold medal in the Men’s 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Jones will sound the Hurricane Warning Siren prior to Saturday afternoon’s game against the Oilers. He will also be honored during the first period, and will sign autographs on the concourse during the first intermission, outside section 108.

Jones burst onto the swimming scene at the 2005 World University Games, when he won the gold medal in the 50 freestyle, becoming the first African-American male to win a gold medal at the World University Games. At the 2006 Pan Pacific Games, he became the first African American to break a swimming world record in an Olympic-contested event, as a part of the American 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay team. He also won the 50 meter freestyle, swimming the event in the fastest time in the world for 2006.

But Jones is best known as part of the American 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay team at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games which also included Michael Phelps, Jason Lezak and Garrett Weber-Gale. The foursome shattered the world record in the event with a time of 3 minutes, 8.24 seconds, edging the team from France for the gold medal. Jones is currently touring the nation highlighting the need for learn-to-swim lessons for African-American and Hispanic children. For more information, please visit www.cullenjonesdiversitytour.com.
