The move comes as a precursor to Scott Walker being activated from injured reserve - he has a chance to play tomorrow night against Toronto.
That meant someone needed to be removed from the roster to stay under the limit, and LaCouture was the one to go. According to Jim Rutherford, the team decided Dwight Helminen and Patrick Dwyer better fill the team's needs currently.
"Dwight has played real well and covers us at center," said Rutherford, who has Brandon Sutter and Matt Cullen out with injuries. "Dwyer is a good penalty killer, and Peter [Laviolette] wanted to keep him at this time."
Rutherford said he didn't expect Cullen to play until later in the week, but was hopeful Patrick Eaves could play tomorrow.
Dwyer played 14:10 in his NHL debut yesterday, including 1:27 on the penalty kill.
