Who Plays in Toronto?

There’s been an awful lot of lineup turnover in the last few days, and it will be interesting to see how Peter Laviolette organizes things for tonight’s game in Toronto.

The Canes must be fairly confident that Patrick Eaves and Scott Walker will be able to play, because if they don’t, that will leave them shorthanded from the start.  Unless something changes between now and then, those two should play tonight, with Matt Cullen, Joni Pitkanen and Brandon Sutter as the injured scratches.

I’ll be looking to see what happens with the trio of Dwight Helminen, Chad LaRose and Tuomo Ruutu, who each had a goal while playing together in last Sunday’s win over Toronto.  You’d like to see them kept together after they showed such immediate chemistry, but that may not be possible if the Hurricanes really want to play four natural centers, which was a stated reason for putting Dan LaCouture on waivers yesterday (he would clear at noon if unclaimed).  Check the depth chart to see what I mean.

Of course, so much shuffling has gone on from game-to-game (the aforementioned Helminen line was discovered by accident halfway through Sunday’s contest), there probably isn’t any point in speculating.  Who knows how much Eaves and Walker would be able to play, anyhow?

I think tonight’s game could be a tricky one from a rebuilding Toronto team that suddenly looks a lot better than the “built” one from the past few years.  For a more in-depth preview on the rest of the week’s games and other goings-on in Canes land, yesterday's edition of the Hurricanes Report should have you covered.

On a side note, we’ve been really pleased with the response to our new podcast so far.  Thanks for helping to make it an early success, and keep feedback coming to webmaster@carolinahurricanes.com.
