Great story last night involving one of my counterparts in Washington, Web Producer Brett Leonhardt.

When Jose Theodore picked up an injury during the morning skate and it became clear that Simeon Varlamov wasn’t going to be able to make it to Washington in time for the game, the Caps turned to Leonhardt, who has some experience playing goal in college. At 6-foot-7, he probably also takes up more net than the other options the Caps had available to them at the time.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, Varlamov arrived about 10 minutes after the puck dropped, and Leonhardt never saw any game action.  Full story here.

Now, we here in Carolina have had some injury problems of our own over the last few years, but I can’t say Jim Rutherford has ever had to put either myself or Eric Bridenstine on notice. Good thing too, because I don’t think college club roller hockey and a Raleigh Street Hockey League championship is enough of a resume builder for me, and Eric has issues of his own.

Maybe if I played defense I would have had more of a shot last week, but sadly, I’m a forward. Also, as Eric pointed out this morning, it probably wouldn’t be worth the insurance costs to the team, because there’s a very real chance I would be decapitated suffer an upper-body injury.

Either way, my ship seems to have sailed. Cam Ward and Dennis Seidenberg are back in action tonight, with Tim Gleason a good possibility after all. I never knew how close I came.
